The Bedford Community Health Foundation has completed their Fall 2023 grant cycle, with $73,609 in grants. Funds were awarded to 13 non-profits who provide health care or health-related services to Bedford residents. Since its inception, BCHF has awarded over 7.1 million dollars in grants and scholarships to benefit those living in the Bedford area.

Over the past years, the foundation has taken a more comprehensive approach by addressing more aspects of health, such as healthy neighborhood conditions, access to healthy foods, dental health, and transportation. A broader view in health allows the foundation to better address the root causes of health disparities in the town and county of Bedford.

Fall 2023 Recipients are as follows:

Food For Kids: $5,000 to support their weekend backpack program for 5 Bedford County schools.

Avenel: $4,500 to support the purchase of an AED and to help with costs to bring house into ADA compliance.

VA Hunters Who Care, Inc.: $6,000 to support the Venison for the Hungry program.

CASA of Central VA: $7,000 to provide support for their Child Advocacy services.

Patric Henry Family Services: $5,600 to support the Homes for Hope program.

Meals on Wheels: $5,000 to provide meal deliveries to shut ins in Bedford.

Encircle: $3,391 to purchase a hospital bed and three immersion blenders and attachments for their residents.

SML Good Neighbors: $6,618 to provide support for an on-site Nurse and Social Worker for Summer Camp.

Johnsons Health Center: $8,000 to provide support for a vision screener for the Bedford site.

Sedalia Center: $6,000 to provide support for the building of a handicap ramp.

Society of St. Andrews: $3,000 to provide support for gleaning activities in Bedford.

Lake Christian Ministries: $10,000 to support dental and health services for clients in the New Tomorrow’s program.

The Wharton Memorial Foundation: $4,500 to provide support for an early childhood development project in a public space.

Brook Hill Farm: $5,000 to fund their therapy program for at-risk youth.

The Doorways: $5,000 to support the Patient and Family Access Program.

VA Cooperative Extension: $3,060 to support families who need support with food nutrition.

Lynchburg Daily Bread: $13,598 to support their food assistance program providing nutritious meals once a week to residents of Raintree and Salem Court Apartments.

Children’s Trust: $10,000 to support their Child Advocacy Program which provides court appointed advocates for children in Bedford.

CHIP of Roanoke Valley: $5,000 to provide home visiting services to low-income/at-risk children and their families.

Bedford Community Christmas Station: $11,310 to provide food boxes to families at Christmas and Thanksgiving.

American Red Cross: $6,100 for disaster relief for families in Bedford.

BUG: $2,400 to support improvements for the growing of additional food for the community.

Bedford Hospice House: $6,000 to support the senior scholarship program for Bedford residents.

CVACL: $13,000 to provide transportation services for life saving treatments to residents of Bedford.

Covered Chaplaincy: $5,000 to support Chaplain services and chaplain training program for Emergency services in Bedford.

University of Lynchburg: $2,164 to provide for the purchase of one AED device and two First Aid kits for Claytor Nature Center.

Free Clinic of Central VA: $13,000 for continued health services at the Bedford Office. Bedford Co.

Social Services: $5,000 to support the Drug Court Program.

Bedford Public Library System: $7,000 to provide on-site health information and other healthy living related items and programs.
