David W. and Sandra L.R. Boyes Physician Education Scholarship
A Scholarship designed for Physicians and Specialists who seek continuing education.
David and Sandra Boyes promoted health and healthy living throughout their careers and in volunteer roles during their retirements. David held a BA Degree in Math and Chemistry. He worked at Owens Corning and at Piedmont Label in Bedford. Sandra, in addition to her BSN degree, held a Ph.D. in Education which enabled her to actively pursue her two passions – education and medicine. In Bedford, she taught in the Bedford Memorial Hospital LPN school of Nursing from 1969 to 1986. She taught in Bedford County schools from 1986 to 1990. David was killed in a tragic accident in 2006. Sandra continued their shared vision of impacting health care for seniors through the creation of this scholarship.

As our population figures reflect a greater percetage of seniors, physicians will be seeing and treating different patient populations with new needs.
The purpose of the David W. and Sandra L.R. Boyes Scholarship is to provide financial assistance for physicians who want to pursue further education that will prepare them for the growing, changing and unique health needs of seniors.
Preference will be given to female physicians, to those specializing in geriatrics and to those in family practices with a large percentage of senior patients.
Scholarship recipients are not required to practice in Bedford City or County. In fact, the scholarship in intended to help, among others, applicants who currently practice or plan to practice in rural Virginia or southern Appalachian areas.
Specialists of all kinds, including chiropractors and osteopaths, are encouraged to apply.
Scholarship awards
Applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee and the recipient will be notified by mail. The scholarship check will be sent to the institution where the recipient is enrolled.
