The Bedford Community Health Foundation offers a variety of scholarships for health professionals in an effort to help and retain trained healthcare providers in Bedford City and County. Deadline for application is June 1.

Applying for a Scholarship:


PROCEDURE:

To apply, send a letter explaining your request. The letter must be received by June 1, unless the application is for the Janet Bowyer Wood Short Course. The Scholarship Committee will make its determination by June 30. Scholarship award letters and checks will be mailed to the schools by August 15. Exceptions to these requirements can be made at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

In the case of the Maxwell Dudley Davidson Scholarship, all pre-employment interviews must be completed by July 1, and all contract signings must occur before July 31.

Please include with your application a cover letter that outlines your plans and anticipated costs. If you have questions about the scholarships or procedure, please call BCHF at 540-586-5292, email or stop by the office on the second floor of the Bedford Public Library between 9 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

The Bedford Community Health Foundation (BCHF) offers a variety of scholarships to residents of Bedford City and Country, and health care providers employed in the Bedford City or County area.

These scholarships are designed to assist:

-full-time nursing students
-nurses who are employed and seek additional education
-full-time allied health students and graduate students
-high school students studying at the Bedford Science and Technology Center

Scholarship Awards
Applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee and the recipient will be notified by mail. The scholarship check will be sent to the school where the recipient is enrolled.

Available Scholarships

Allied Heath Scholarship

The Foundation awards up to $1,000 for full-time college and post-graduate studies for allied health students that meet the requirements. This scholarship covers the cost of tuition only.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be a Bedford City/County resident enrolled in a Virginia state approved program of study. Applicant must maintain a "C" average or above for each class. College level semester courses require a desire to work in the Bedford community. Studies must be in a certificate or degree program. Tuition will be funded up to $1,000 per year. Students should submit to the Foundation course costs and details of any other scholarships/employer tuition reimbursements.

David W. and Sandra L.R. Boyes Physician Education Scholarship

David and Sandra Boyes promoted health and healthy living throughout their careers and in volunteer roles during their retirements. David held a BA Degree in Math and Chemistry. He worked at Owens Corning and at Piedmont Label in Bedford. Sandra, in addition to her BSN degree, held a Ph.D. in Education which enabled her to actively pursue her two passions – education and medicine. In Bedford, she taught in the Bedford Memorial Hospital LPN school of Nursing from 1969 to 1986. She taught in Bedford County schools from 1986 to 1990. David was killed in a tragic accident in 2006. Sandra continued their shared vision of impacting health care for seniors through the creation of this scholarship.

Application Information

CNA Scholarship

Applicant must have approval from the nursing supervisor at Bedford Memorial Hospital, Oakwood Manor or a letter of promised employment as a healthcare provider in Bedford City/County.

Maxwell Dudley Davidson Scholarship

The Foundation offers $2,000 scholarships for nursing students willing to work in the Bedford community after graduation.


REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be accepted for employment, after graduation, at either Bedford Memorial Hospital or a pre-approved healthcare provider in Bedford City/County. Students must be studying for their ADN, RN, or RN/BSN.


The scholarship does not pay for the first year of general education classes in a four year degree program.
Applicant must be a Bedford City/County resident, enrolled in a Virginia state approved program of study, maintain a "C" average or above for each class and be a full time student.
Applicant must apply for a position at Bedford Memorial Hospital within 30 days of graduation. Applicant can apply for a position with another healthcare provider located in Bedford City/County with approval.
Once employed in Bedford, scholarships awarded will be forgiven based on the number of hours worked. For each 1,040 hours (approximately 6 months) worked, $1,000 will be credited to the total sum of award that the student received. If employment is severed for any reason, the remaining balance will become due. It is the responsibility of the nurse to repay all money received from the Foundation in these situations.

Janet Bowyer Wood (JBW) Scholarship

The Janet Bowyer Wood Scholarship supports continuing education for licensed nurses employed in Bedford City/County or nurses living in Bedford City/County and employed at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).


JBW Short Courses
100% of the cost of tuition will be funded up to $500/student.


REQUIREMENTS:
Nurses employed by Bedford Memorial Hospital or Oakwood Manor must see their supervisor. All other CNAs, LPNs, RNs, and other licensed nurses must be employed in Bedford City/County or must live in Bedford City/County and be employed at the Salem VAMC. Travel, meals, hotel expenses will not be covered.


PROCEDURE: Apply to the Foundation in writing or online by June 1. There is no deadline for this scholarship. Funds are awarded on a first come/first served basis.


JBW College Level Classes

A $500 scholarship is available for full-time or part-time study.


REQUIREMENTS:
CNAs, LPNs, RNs, and other licensed nurses must be employed as healthcare providers in Bedford City/County or must live in Bedford City/County and be employed at the Salem VAMC, studying in a certificate or degree program. The applicant must maintain a "C" or above in each class.
JBW Graduate Level Courses
This scholarship is awarded on an individual basis. Please contact the Foundation for more information.

JBW Textbooks
Up to $500 is awarded to purchase textbooks and lab supplies.


REQUIREMENTS: CNAs, LPNs, RNs, and other licensed nurses must be employed as healthcare providers in Bedford City/County or must live in Bedford City/County and be employed at the Salem VAMC, pursuing a degree or certificate course of study.
