Bedford Hospice House
The Bedford Community Health Foundation is proud of its long-standing involvement with the project to build a Hospice House in Bedford . Back in 1999, Lvylyn and Ralph Hardy set up the Hardy Family Hospice Fund within the Foundation, in response to the needs that Lvylyn saw during her years as a hospice volunteer. The purpose of this Fund was to endow such a project. This endowment Fund currently stands at over $106,000.
Subsequently, the Foundation acted as fiscal agent for the Hospice House Steering Committee, and helped it to raise over $130,000 towards the cost of building and equipping a Hospice House.
In November, 2005, the Steering Committee dissolved itself, and a new entity, Bedford Hospice House, Inc., with its own 501(c)(3) charitable status, was formed. With the formation of the new Board to run the affairs of the Hospice House, the Foundation ceased to be its fiscal agent. Even though the Foundation no longer provides this direct service to this project, we will continue as a proud supporter of the Hospice House in its next phase of operation.
"The Bedford Community Health Foundation has been a tremendous help in getting us started on our way to a Hospice House. Frankly, we would not be where we are today without them. " - Jacqueline Wente
Bedford Children's Dental Health Program
The Bedford Community Health Foundation is particularly proud of its efforts to bring a children's dental health program to Bedford Health Department. Through a very successful partnership with Health Director, Dr. Katherine Nichols, and the Central Virginia Health District, the Foundation was able to offer a substantial grant, which enabled the Health Department to hire a children's dentist for the Bedford office. Dr. Jim Cornick began work at his clinic in August of 2005.Thanks to the generous grant made by the Foundation, the Bedford Children's Dental Clinic now offers area children and adolescents a full-service dental health program including preventative check-ups, cleaning, diagnostic care, restorative care, and sealants. The clinic also provides care for Bedford Head Start and Bedford County Schools students.
"More children suffer from tooth decay than from any other health problem. Fifty percent of youngsters (ages 5 to 9) and 80% of teens (ages 17 and 18) have one or more cavities." -James Cornick, DDS
